As part of its annual Ethics Awareness Week, the UVU Center for the Study of Ethics is hosting a special session featuring Utah Lt. Governor Spencer J. Cox. He will deliver remarks on the topic of “Responding to White Supremacy: The Role of Public Officials in Facing Extremism,” on Tuesday, September 26th at 8:45 a.m. in the UVU Classroom Building, Room 511. This event is one of seventeen sessions through the week including panel discussions, lectures, film screenings, and workshops addressing the common theme of “Ethics in Public Life.”

“We are honored to have the Lt. Governor on our campus,” said Brian Birch, director of the Center for the Study of Ethics. “He has been a strong voice for inclusion in our state and in the national conversation.” This special session will take place just prior to the keynote address at 10:00 a.m., which will be delivered by Provo Mayor John Curtis and entitled “Cultivating Positive Dialogue in Public Discourse.”

The week also includes the Excellence in Ethics Award presented this year to Karen Hale, Deputy Mayor of Community & External Affairs for Salt Lake County. With a strong background in public service, Hale is a former Utah State Senator and senior advisor to Mayor Ralph Becker of Salt Lake City. She has been a strong advocate for education having served on the Public Education Appropriations Committee and the Senate Education Committee along with numerous other boards and community initiatives. “We cannot think of a more deserving recipient of this award,” said Elaine Englehardt, distinguished professor of ethics at UVU. “Karen exemplifies the best virtues of public service and we look forward to honoring her.”

All events are free and open to the public and will be held in the Classroom Building, Room 511. For a complete schedule of events, please visit http://www.uvu.edu/ethics/eaw/2017_eaw.html.
