Regional Humanitarian Organizations and United Nations Conference

Utah Valley University President Astrid S. Tuminez, Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski, and representatives of LDS Charities, CHOICE Humanitarian, and Engage Now Africa are among the presenters at an upcoming all-day conference hosted by UVU’s Office of Global Engagement. The event is designed to improve functionality, connectivity, and partnerships between civil societies (especially nongovernmental organizations, or NGOs) and the United Nations.

The delegation from the United Nations’ Department of Public Information includes Jeff Brez, chief of United Nations-NGO relations, advocacy and special events, and Felipe Queipo, communications officer of the advocacy and special events outreach division.

The conference, titled, “Working Together, Making a Difference,” will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the Science Building, SB 134. The event provides an opportunity for regional NGOs to engage in dialogue with the U.N.’s Department of Public Information. It will also prepare groups for the historic UN-DPI world conference, scheduled to be held in Salt Lake City on Aug. 27-29, 2019. It’s the first such UN-sponsored event that will take place outside of New York City. https://outreach.un.org/ngorelations/

Civil societies from Utah will be in attendance at the Utah Valley University conference,  along with many from neighboring states. Civil society organizations are often defined as an "aggregate of nongovernmental organizations and institutions that manifest the interests and will of citizens.”
