About the Program

The National Security Summer Session in Washington, DC is a distinctive engaged learning experience for students intending to work in the national security field.

Students spend three weeks in the classroom at UVU during the first summer block enrolled in two courses - one focused on the roles and functions of key national security departments, agencies, and organizations; the other focused on career exploration and professional conduct in national security.

The fourth week is then spent in Washington, DC, meeting with senior national security officials and professionals in the international and non-government community.  We visit entities such as the pentagon, CIA, White House, National Security Council, Capitol, Department of Justice, State Department, FBI, ICRC, Human Rights First, Public International Law & Policy Group, and Department of Homeland Security.

The fifth and final week of the term would be spent back at UVU discussing the DC experience, internalizing lessons learned, and strategizing for future academic and career work in national security.

The program is aimed at freshmen and sophomores - in part, to allow them to spend their junior year summers interning or working with some of the contacts they make while on this DC trip - but will be open to junior and seniors, too.  Students use their experience in DC - to include in-depth knowledge and personal contacts - to compete for internships and jobs in the national security field.

This program offers students unique, inside access to the people and places where national security decisions are made as well as invaluable networking opportunities.
