Congrats to the Ethics Bowl Team!

Last Saturday, November 14th, the UVU Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Team competed in their annual Regional competition. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, this year's competition combined the Wasatch and Rocky Mountain Regions together and was held over Zoom. A total of sixteen teams from Utah, Colorado, Nevada, and California participated.

The Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl combines the excitement and fun of a competitive tournament with a valuable educational experience for undergraduate students. The formant, rules, and procedures of the IEB all have been developed to model widely acknowledged best methods of reasoning in practical and professional ethics.

Utah Valley University sent two teams to the event. Members of Team A were Josiah Alderink, Emily Clark, Kaitlyn Russell, Taylor Steele, and Logan Johnson and members of Team B were Caitlin Leavitt, Jake Lynam, Sam Newman, Kyle Thomas, Rhoberta Blankmeyer, and Victoria Garcia.

During the competition, teams presented moral arguments to a panel of judges on cases ranging from the ethics of social policy to medical and business ethics. Both of UVU's teams performed extremely well with Team A finishing as one of the top four schools. The Ethics Bowl Team received a bid to Nationals, which will take place in early spring next year. This is the team's second consecutive year being invited to participate in Nationals.

Special thanks are given to students Justin Brierley, Nathan Segeberg, Briana Vanisi, Isaac Worsham, Talon Williams, Erynn Lammi, Karla White, and Dan Woodfield who assisted the team in research for the cases and helped practice the moral arguments with them.

Their coach, Professor Jeffrey Nielsen, stated, "Our students won the respect of the judges and other teams by their clear and cogent moral arguments and by the respectful and intelligent way they engaged the other teams in moral dialogue."

Congratulations to all the students for their hard work and diligence that led to this year's success.
