The Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl is a competition that assigns cases based on real-life ethical dilemmas to a college team about six weeks before the competition. Teams research and prepare arguments to present and defend at a match hosted by one of the area schools. During the competition, which is divided into rounds, two teams are assigned two cases before a panel of three judges, who represent the academic and civic communities.

Ethics Bowl is designed to encourage civil discussion and sophisticated ethical analysis of perplexing and potentially divisive ethical issues. Students not only earn points for well-constructed arguments to support their standpoints, they are also awarded points for collegial discussion, which includes acknowledging convincing arguments from their opponents. Teams are also scored on the merits of their answers when questioned by a panel of judges. This year, representative cases included discussions of vaccine mandates, rock-climbing on public lands, vaccine patents, Senate filibusters, and ransomware attacks.

The 2022 regional Wasatch Collegiate event will be hosted by Utah Valley University. For more information please visit the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl website.
