On December 13, 2021, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations approved a written statement  E/CN/6/2022/NGO/141 co-sponsored by the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and Utah-China Friendship Improvement Sharing Hands Development and Commerce, two NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC for the 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66).  E/CN.6/2022/NGO/141

The statement urges the Commission to have mountain women and girls in the focus of the 2030 Development Agenda. It highlights the partnership between two cosponsoring NGOs, Utah Valley University (UVU) in the United States and Osh Technological University (OshTU) in the Kyrgyz Republic with focus on the promotion of the mountain women, families, and communities cause as part of sustainable mountain development (SMD) elsewhere.

It emphasizes challenges from the climate change experienced by local communities, women and families in the mountainous State of Utah and the Kyrgyz Republic and programs and efforts made by executive and legislative branches of power in both states to mitigate their impacts.

The statement also features an inclusive co-curricular student engaged learning (SEL) model designed at UVU to encourage undergraduate traditional and non-traditional students to advocate for SMD and gender agenda and gain professional skills, networking opportunities in addition to the international recognition. A key role in the model is played by the Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF), a coalition of student clubs at Utah Valley University (UVU).

The UIMF is preparing to host at CSW66 a parallel event titled: Inclusive Student Engaged Learning Model to Empower Mountain Women Globally on March 21, 2022. The event will advocate for mountain women and girls. The UIMF’s main priority in contributing to the agenda of CSW66 is to get language concerning mountain women into the final document of CSW66.
