Contributing to Tabitha’s Way by Preparing Birthday Kits for Kids

On January 23, 2025, UIMF members took part in preparing birthday kits that would then be sent to the charitable organization Tabitha’s way.

On January 23, 2025, I was able to take part in preparing birthday kits that would then be sent to Tabitha’s way. Tabitha’s Way is a food pantry that helps those individuals and families get food when they need it through tough times. These birthday kits would be able to be picked up by the parents of kids who would not be able to afford a cake or presents in their current situation. These birthday kits were filled with a cake mix, all the necessities for a party, and a few presents like a book. We participated in this service project as part of our assignment for POLS3410 class on Globalization and Sustainable Development in preparations for our participation at the 69th session of the Commission on the Startus of Women in March 10-13, 2025.

We were able to hear from a representative from Tabitha’s Way to tell us more about it. The mission of Tabitha’s Way is “to help individuals and families through tough times by: Providing temporary food assistance, recommending resources for self-reliance, and helping neighbors to help neighbors”. This mission shows how dedicated they are to helping people in their current situations while also preparing them to help themselves and others in the future. One of the things that impressed me the most about Tabitha’s Way is that they will never turn down someone the first time they come in. Without completely knowing a person’s situation, they are always willing to help. I am even more impressed by the number of volunteers that they can have on a regular basis to come in and help. This just shows that the Utah community is close-knit, and the people here want to help each other.

The student-engaged learning model (SEL) was in full effect at this event. The room was full of UVU students from all different majors and backgrounds who all have the same desire and goal to help others. These students were all engaged in helping put together these kits in a quick and easy way. Because there were so many students involved, it did not take long to make a big step towards helping members of the community. This just shows how every person getting involved, especially students when they have the time, can make a huge difference.

Preparations

I am very grateful to have been a part of this event, and I look forward to future events of this sort. I personally know people who will benefit directly from this event and others like it so it makes me feel good every time I can use a little of my time to help them. I’m a huge fan of Tabitha’s Way and other organizations that help local communities like they do and I’m constantly searching for those opportunities to help.
