About the Program

We integrate acquisition, modeling, analysis, and management of geospatial reference data. Licensed land surveyors have an obligation to protect the public and private real property rights, title, and interests. This often involves field investigation, data analysis, and application of boundary/property laws and legal principles pertaining to those properties.

B.S. in Surveying & Mapping

123 Credits to Graduate

Surveying and mapping is the study of geospatial measurement and representation, including such disciplines as land surveying, photogrammetry, remote sensing (satellite imaging and laser scanning), geographic information systems (GIS), cartography, global positioning systems (GPS), and some parts of geography and civil engineering.

The B.S. in Surveying & Mapping is accredited by the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Associate or Associate of Applied Science?

The A.A.S. degree may not prepare you to pass the national NCEES Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam because the exam is designed for takers who hold a four-year degree in surveying or geomatics. The A.A.S. degree has some courses that transfer into the Bachelor of Science in Surveying & Mapping, but many courses will not transfer. We highly recommend seeking the A.S. degree followed by the completion of the Bachelor of Science in Surveying & Mapping.

A.A.S. in Surveying Technology

63 Credits to Graduate

The Associate of Applied Science degree is a terminal two-year degree designed to meet the minimum State of Utah requirement for licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS).

Certificates

The surveying and mapping program offers three certificates. The Certificate of Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems is offered in conjunction with the Department of Science and can be earned on the way to a Bachelor of Science in Surveying & Mapping.

Surveying & MappingCareers

  1. Surveyors

Gather data and distance points to determine boundaries and topography of land.

  2. Cartographers

Collect and measure geographic information to create and update maps and charts for a variety of purposes.

  3. Photogrammetrists

Similar to a cartographer, photogrammetrists specialize in gathering data from photographic sources to build 2D and/or 3D models.

  4. GIS Specialists

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) specialists develop, implement, and maintain systems and databases of geospatial data and analyze and design digital maps using geospatial data.

  5. Survey Technicians

Help with the duties and responsibilities of a surveyor. Typically an entry-level job.

  6. GIS Technicians

Helps with the duties and responsibilities of GIS specialists. Typically an entry-level job.
