The AAS in Surveying Technology meets the minimum educational component for licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) in the State of Utah according to the State of Utah Office of Administrative Rules 156-22-302(c)(1). This degree prepares students for immediate employment beyond entry level work in surveying or civil engineering firms. Students will be prepared to perform many of the various field and office tasks related to surveying including site and topographic surveys, boundary investigation and research, map-making, various survey adjustment calculations, writing of legal property descriptions, and other survey technician duties and responsibilities.
Follow the AAS -Surveying Technology Degree Map to learn more about courses. Note the Course Delivery Mode shown in column "M". Other than a few courses most courses in the program are offered either Live Stream (LS), Online (O), or Hybrid (H),
Note: This delivery mode (H) will be shown on the official UVU Registration System as Face-to-Face. However, the Surveying and Mapping program delivers these courses BOTH Face-to-Face and Live Stream simultaneously.
Course delivery modes may vary by semester based on enrollment, instructor availability, and scheduling needs. Reach out to the program coordinator for more information.
The flexibility of the Surveying and Mapping course delivery modes helps students meet their goal of becoming a licensed Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) in the Utah while simultaneously allowing them to live in areas remote from the UVU Main Orem Campus.
You may have sufficient work experience to qualify for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL). The Surveying and Mapping Program has instructions specific to surveying to assist students in obtaining such credit. Surveying and Mapping courses eligible for CPL are listed below.
EGDT 1040, 1400, SURV 1850, 2100, 2240, 2500, 1700, and 2700.
Apply to UVU and declare the A.A.S. degree in Surveying Technology as their major, receive a UVID, and be assigned an academic advisor. Be aware of the UVU Application deadlines for each semester.: Aug 1st (Fall semester), Dec 1st (Spring semester), Apr 30 (Summer semester)
Students entering the program are strongly encouraged to have access to a personal computer and possess basic computer literacy skills including; file management, learning management software, the use of typical office software and installing types of software packages. Students lacking these skills may consider taking IM1010 or equivalent

63 Credits to Graduate
See the UVU Course Catalog to see details of each course required in the AAS degree.
The Surveying and Mapping Program offers a Certificate of Proficiency (CIP) in Surveying Technology which is designed to meet option three of the State of Utah administrative code allowing an individual seeking a license who holds a BS degree in a related field to surveying plus 30 semester credit hours of surveying specific course work. The Certificate of Proficiency (CIP) in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a collaborative effort with Surveying and Mapping but the certificate is offered through the Department of Earth Science. These two certificates can be earned on the way to an A.A.S degree in Surveying Technology.

19 Credits to Graduate
Offered through the Department of Earth Science to any interested students, surveying and mapping students may obtain this certificate in the process of obtaining their B.S. degree in surveying and mapping.

28 Credits to Graduate
Designed to meet the State of Utah Surveying licensure education requirements if the candidate holds or will hold a B.S. degree in a discipline related to surveying.

"We were all in it together and everyone cared and wanted to see each other succeed."
"As I progressed through the surveying and mapping program, I was exposed to a lot of real-world training and application that I can confidently say greatly prepared me to hit the ground running upon graduation. Overall, I loved my time in the UVU surveying and mapping program. From fellow classmates to the professors, we were all in it together and everyone cared and wanted to see each other succeed. We had a camaraderie that is hard to find in a large university, but the surveying and mapping program has it!"
