Before You Begin: Required Preparation Steps

1. Review the FAMS Internship Info Sheet
2. Meet with your academic advisor to ensure that you are eligible for the Stronger Families Project.
3. Create a virtual interview. Detailed instructions are below.
4. Request recommendation surveys from two recommenders.  One should be a professor, and the other should be an employer or volunteer supervisor.  If you do not have prior employment or volunteer experience, a second professor is acceptable.  Please contact your recommenders before entering their information into this survey:  Stronger Families Project Recommendation Survey.
   • Both recommenders must have submitted their recommendations before you can finish your application (Step 5). You will receive notifications when those have been submitted.
5. Complete the Stronger Families Project Internship Application. Detailed instructions below.
6. Once accepted into the program, you will then need to complete Internship Orientation, and save your completion code.
   • Your completion code will be displayed on your screen and emailed to you once you complete the orientation.
7. Now that you have completed the prior steps, you are waiting for acceptance into the Stronger Families Project via email. If accepted, the link to apply for credit and further instructions will be provided in your acceptance email from the Stronger Families Project. Please have your complete orientation code available at that time.

Students should apply well before the deadline. Applications are accepted until the closing date (with few exceptions).

If you contact the program coordinator, [email protected], an alternative interview may be accepted to replace the virtual mock teaching video.

*SFP does not operate in the summer.

Virtual Teaching Demonstration

If you are a UVU student, FAMS 4500 is the prerequisite to this internship. Depending on the application window, you may have already completed the class, or perhaps you have yet to complete it but will do so before the internship begins.

• If you have already completed FAMS 4500, you may use a recorded teaching demonstration video that you completed for an assignment in that class. Choose a video where only you are teaching (not a group presentation or pair teaching) a key concept from the Survival Skills for Healthy Families curriculum. Be sure it is viewable with a working URL, preferably from a private YouTube channel. Copy and paste the URL into the Stronger Families Project application survey (Step #5 above).
• If you have not yet completed FAMS 4500, are a transfer or non-UVU student, or want to record a new video (not submit one from 4500), use the following steps below to submit a mock teaching demonstration.

The purpose is to provide a brief example of your teaching for the SFP Administrative Team.

Record your virtual interview using a laptop, tablet, or phone and upload it to YouTube as an "unlisted" video (unsearchable, but accessible to those with the link).

Step 1: Dress professionally and, if possible, stand during the recording. We want to see body language and personality. Use a professional background free from distractions. Prepare a 5-minute (maximum) teaching presentation by choosing a short section with ONE main idea from the Survival Skills family life education curriculum from FAMS 4500. Learn the section well enough to present without reading or referring to it. If you are bilingual in Spanish and indicated on the placement form that you’d like to teach in Spanish, your teaching demonstration should be in Spanish.

For those without access to the Survival Skills curriculum, use this handout as content for your mini lesson. You do not need to teach everything in the handout, but present your chosen section in an engaging, memorable way using at least one teaching method such as an object lesson, visual aid, or role play.

Step 2: Identify your intended audience for this mock teaching: children, teens, or parents. Record yourself as if presenting to an invisible audience using pedagogical practices that engage learners in family life education.

Step 3: Upload your recorded video to YouTube. This video can assist with the upload process. Ensure the link works when you are logged out of YouTube.

Step 4: Add the video link to your Stronger Families Project Internship Application Form (see Step #5 above).
