Dr. Eunmi Joung

Biography

Dr. Eunmi Joung is an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical and Quantitative Reasoning at Utah Valley University, where she earned her Ph.D. in mathematics education from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She puts a lot of thought into making her classroom a place where students feel comfortable, engaged, and motivated to learn, building her courses around collaborative group work, hands-on activities, and challenging problems that push students to think flexibly and build real mathematical confidence. Her research grows naturally out of her teaching, focusing on three areas_ helping students learn through multiple solution strategies, using video-based assessment to make student thinking visible, and exploring how generative AI can support deeper learning in undergraduate mathematics. She has shared this work in journals such as School Science and Mathematics, MathAMATYC Educator, the American Journal of Distance Education, and the International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology and presented at AERA, AMATYC, and SSMA. Several grants have supported these projects along the way. Dr. Joung is also deeply invested in the broader mathematics education community, currently serving as president of UMATYC and on the editorial panel for MathAMATYC Educator, while also reviewing journals and conference proposals for organizations including AERA, AMATYC, Mathematics Thinking and Learning, and School Science and Mathematics.
