Biography

Dr. Nancy Peterson is a professor in the elementary education department of UVU's School of Education. Prior to her tenure at Utah Valley she taught full time at West Virginia Wesleyan College, and adjunct courses for Old Dominion University. Peterson co-founded UVU's Forum on Engaged Reading, and co-chairs For the Love of Reading conference, an annual retreat and celebration of books and reading motivation for young people. Prior to her graduate degrees she taught Kindergarten, 4th and 6th grades, and K-6th music and art in public schools in Utah, Arizona and Texas. In 2011-12, Peterson was a visiting professor at the University of Virginia, associated with the Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning, investigating the Responsive Classroom Approach. Her teaching emphases include: academic diversity and social and emotional complexities in elementary classrooms, encouraging diverse models of instruction in K-16; elementary language arts instruction including developmental stage spelling approaches and writing instruction for children; children's literature, with ongoing focus in nonfiction as support for 21st Century classrooms. Peterson holds an Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction with minors in Gifted Education and Counseling Education from the University of Virginia. She has an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education from Old Dominion University, and a B.S. in Elementary Education with music minor from Brigham Young University. She is licensed to teach K-8 and holds a Gifted Education Endorsement in the state of Utah.
