Program Details

This program will traverse anthropology critically and from an Indigenous lens as a travel seminar. You will meet and hear from local scholars and community members in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) to learn about life and issues in Aotearoa. Aotearoa New Zealand is a modern nation-state that is founded on a treaty relationship between Tangata Whenua (Māori) and the British Crown, which recognises Indigenous peoples in public policy and space in a manner that may be confronting compared to the context in the United States. Yet, there are many disparities and ongoing struggles against the colonial structures in New Zealand that local and regional Indigenous scholars face, research, and work to repair. We will observe, listen to, and learn from these thinkers and this context through pre-departure study and various on the ground experiences during this travel seminar. We will also immerse ourselves in the local setting moving through public transportation and with opportunities to try local foods, and full-day excursions outside of the city centre, as well as additional optional experiences to gain greater local insights.

ANTH 475R:  Special Topics Anthropology: Indigenous Studies and Traveling Critically - Aotearoa New Zealand

Physical Requirements:

Do to the intensity of the schedule on long travel students must be mentally able to be present and participate. While there are some accommodations available, Auckland city is not as friendly to wheelchairs as the US. The hotel may have refrigerators in the rooms, but that is TBC. Most ammenities will be available but not in the amounts or manner usually available for US residents. New Zealand is also more European in size and comfort than the typical mainstream US expectation might be.

Study Abroad typically involves a lot of walking! Make sure that you will be able to walk long distances over uneven surfaces.

Travel during the summer in foreign countries can be uncomfortably hot and humid. Air conditioning is not always available.

Students on study abroad must be able to independently navigate in a foreign country and be able to follow specific instructions. This may include figuring out and using public transportation, making their way through airports, negotiating large crowds, and making smart decisions related to their own safety in unfamiliar circumstances.

*Accessibility services vary from country to country. Contact UVU Accessibility Services if you require such services. Students with significant physical or mental health needs should discuss their suitability for study abroad travel with their medical professional, UVU Student Health Services, UVU Accessibility Services, and/or family before making the decision to apply.
