Students in the College of Health and Public Services (CJ/Law Enforcement, Emergency Services, Forensic Science, Health Science, Public Health, and Nursing) have an exciting opportunity for a study abroad and international collaboration. We are traveling to Christchurch, New Zealand to study emergency management, natural and man-made disasters, and effects of recent devastating earthquakes. We have room for 20+ students on a first-come-first-serve basis. The course(s) will be a credit-bearing (3 credit-hours) offering. Housing (UniLodge UC and VU), in-country transportation and some meals are provided. Personal expenses and activities are the student's responsibility. The faculty, staff and other personnel from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch Public Services and various Emergency Management teams will provide instruction along with faculty from UVU.
*Students are expected to enroll in one of the following courses for this study abroad.
ESMG 4450G Human Factors in Emergency Management
ESMG 4890R Special Topics in Emergency Management
PADM 6790R Special Topics in Public Administration
HLSC 4900R Special Topics in Health Science
NOTE: These are regular Spring Semester with in-country instruction from January 11-27
Course pre-requisites may be waived for students admitted into the study abroad program by the faculty program director

Minimum G.P.A.: 2.0
Students with Academic Standings registration holds at the time of application received for falling below a 2.0 GPA in the previous semester(s) will not be allowed to study abroad and should not apply. Students who fall below a 2.0 GPA in the Fall semester may be withdrawn from their Spring study abroad program (possibly with no refund).
Physical Requirements:
Significant amount of walking and long flight time.
Students on study abroad must be able to independently navigate in a foreign country and be able to follow specific instructions. This may include figuring out and using public transportation, making their way through airports, negotiating large crowds, and making smart decisions related to their own safety in unfamiliar circumstances.

Program fee covers in-country housing and transportation, most meals, international insurance, excursions, and coordination with in-country academics/professionals. The program fee does not include the listed Additional Estimated Costs.

The student is responsible for these additional costs:
Students over the age of 73 at the time of travel may be required to purchase a supplemental international health and evacuation insurance plan through GeoBlue (approx $200-$500+)
Students should be prepared to pay out-of-pocket for travel disruptions including lost luggage, possible COVID tests or quarantine stays if required by the host country for entry or exit, missed flights, etc.
All students are required to pay a $75 non-refundable application fee.

UVU Faculty/Staff Dependent Tuition Waiver benefits may not be used to pay for study abroad fees.
