The Standard Response Protocol

Standard Response Protocol Logo

Our campus is expanding the safety program to include the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), which is based on these five actions: HOLD, SECURE, LOCKDOWN, EVACUATE, and SHELTER. In the event of an emergency, the action and appropriate direction will be communicated using select or all communication methods (text, email, hallway monitors, overhead, etc.).

HOLD, in your room or office or area.

  • Action: Clear hallways and remain in your offices, classrooms, or general area. Do business as usual. Stay in your location until there is an “All Clear” announced.
  • Examples: When something is going on in a building, and all details are unknown. Could be police activity, could be a protest, could be an external incident, or other.

SECURE, get inside, get into a room or office.

LOCKDOWN, locks, lights, get out of sight. This is a life-or-death situation.

  • Action: Demands locking or barricading individual offices and classrooms. Moving occupants out of sight, remaining silent, disappear. Prepare to defend yourself. Do not move until there is an “All Clear” message sent.
  • Examples: Intruder, dangerous or violent person, shooter, active threat.

EVACUATE, to a location or off campus.

  • Action: People move from one location to another in an orderly fashion. Be prepared to follow directions of first responders. In most cases you could bring your personal belongings. If your life is in danger (fire) leave your belongings. Be alert to additional messages.
  • Examples: Fire, chemical spill or leak, earthquake after shaking stops.

SHELTER. Used for group and self-protection.

  • Action: Based on a hazard, risk, or threat outside. Earthquake, drop, cover, and hold on (during shaking). Stay inside because there is a risk outside. May be able to continue business as usual depending on the situation.
  • Examples: Severe weather (high winds, blizzard), hazmat spill (railway or roadway spills), earthquake, wildland fire.

Getting information out quickly is essential in any type of crisis. Please verify that your contact information is current in the Banner system.
