What is the FAFSA?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the official form you use to apply for financial aid from the federal government, your state, and most colleges and universities. It’s your first step toward unlocking funding that can help pay for tuition, books, housing, and other college expenses.

Getting Started

Create a studentaid.gov account

You and any required contributors (like a parent or spouse) need to create a studentaid.gov account before starting the FAFSA. Make sure names and Social Security numbers match official records to avoid delays.

Gather your info

Have your tax documents, bank account balances, and school list ready. If you're a dependent student, you'll also need your parent’s information. This step helps you move through the form quickly and accurately.

Complete & submit the FAFSA

Log in at studentaid.gov, choose your role, and fill out the form. Review everything carefully, sign electronically, and submit. You’ll get a confirmation page with your estimated aid eligibility. UVU’s school code is 004027

Watch for your aid offer

Our office will use the information from your FAFSA to build a financial aid package for you. Check your email and myUVU for updates, and follow up with our office as needed.

What is verification?

The U.S. Department of Education may select your FAFSA for verification to confirm the accuracy of your financial information. If selected, you must complete this process to receive federal aid. Failure to do so will result in the loss of eligibility for federal assistance.

To check your verification tasks, log in to the Student Forms portal. If you haven’t already, create an account to view and complete the required tasks for your financial aid file. Fill out web forms directly in the portal and upload any additional documents using the Upload button under each task. You’ll sign the verification web form using a secure PIN that you create during account setup.

If you're selected for verification after receiving an award, your financial aid may be updated within two weeks of submitting all required documents. You'll be notified via email if there are any changes to your award.

Do I have to complete the FAFSA every year?

Yes, you must complete the FAFSA for every academic year, in order to be eligible for federal aid.

I submitted my FAFSA, now what?

After you submit the FAFSA, you may need to provide additional documentation to help us confirm your financial eligibility. Any tasks you may need to complete can be found in your myUVU portal.
