Every Spring semester, the Gary R. Herbert Institute and Utah Valley University send a group of students to the State Capitol in Salt Lake City to intern for representatives and senators during the Utah Legislative Session. Interns will act as a the sole staff member to assigned legislators during the 45-day period, and have a front row seat to government operations and legislative processes. Legislative intern responsibilities have included constituent correspondence, media relations, policy research, social media outreach, bill tracking, scheduling and administrative duties.
Interns are paid a stipend of roughly $4,000 for the 6 week internship. The 2023 Utah State Legislative Session starts on Tuesday, January 17th and goes until Friday, March 3rd, but students will need to be available full time starting January 2nd.
The Utah State Legislature Internship is a highly competitive and prestigious internship because of the high profile interactions and responsibilities. This internship would be beneficial to a student in any major because of the comprehensive nature of the duties and the benefit of having experience working with policy. This internship will immerse you in communications, policy, research, government, and social situations- all of which would be beneficial to whichever career path you find yourself in.

During the first three weeks of January, Herbert Legislative Interns are required to take preparatory courses offered through UVU’s Political Science and Communication Departments, the Hinckley Institute, and the Gary R. Herbert Institute.
A two-week, full-day credited course is held at UVU during the first two weeks of January, followed by one week of on-site training with the Hinckley Institute held at the Utah State Capitol. Assignments may be given prior to the start of spring semester (during the holiday break). These courses are designed to better equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed during their time with the Legislature. Interns will also attend lunch seminars once a week throughout the Session to discuss ongoing legislation, state policy and local politics. The UVU preparation course, weekly seminars, and internship course typically combine to total 12 credits. If you do not need all 12 credits, please speak with the UVU Government Internship Manager.
