Bachelor of Arts in Spanish

This four-year degree is a liberal arts degree that provides in-depth study into all facets of the Spanish language and culture. There is no special application process, but students should declare their major by contacting the academic advisor for the Languages department.

Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Education

This four-year degree prepares students to teach Spanish in Secondary education (grades 7-12) settings. Students take major courses from the Languages department and licensure courses through the School of Education. This degree requires separate application to the School of Education.

Bachelor of Arts or Science in Integrated Studies; emphasis in Spanish

You can use Spanish as one of two minors in the Integrated Studies Bachelor degree. To do this, you pair the Spanish or Spanish-English Translation & Interpreting minor with another minor from another area of interest to build a customized program of study.

You complete however many hours are required for both of your chosen minors, and you also complete an Integrated Studies core. For more information on this degree contact either the Integrated Studies office or the Language Advisor.

Spanish Minor

This minor can be earned in conjunction with any Bachelor degree major that UVU offers. The minor consists of 18 credit hours of upper-division coursework. There are some specific courses required and a number of electives so be sure to contact the advisor for more information.

Spanish-English Translation and Interpreting Minor

Students in this minor will learn the foundations of translation and interpreting while studying Spanish for specific professions of their choice, such as medicine, law, and business.

This is an extremely career-applicable program, with opportunities for internships with language companies, gaining prerequisites for national interpreting certifications, and learning and becoming certified in industry-standard translation software.

Minor in Languages

Pair Spanish with an additional language pr your choosing! This minor can be earned in conjunction with any Bachelor degree major that UVU offers. It requires 9 cr upper division course work in one language and 11 cr of intermediate level course work in another language (prerequisites will vary from student to student)

Certificates

Healthcare Interpreting Spanish-English, Certificate of Proficiency

The Healthcare Interpreting Spanish-English, Certificate of Proficiency provides students an opportunity to prove their proficiency in Spanish medical terminology and an ability to work as a qualified healthcare interpreter in the Spanish-English language pair.

One of the courses in this certificate also serves as an approved prerequisite for the two national healthcare interpreter certifications in the US (either of which are required to be a certified medical interpreter in Utah).

Provides students with knowledge of important aspects of the interpreting profession, such as interpreting modalities, best practices, ethics, professional qualifications, and strategies for effective communication facilitation.

Spanish-English Translation, Certificate of Proficiency

The Spanish-English Translation, Certificate of Proficiency provides students an opportunity to prove their proficiency in Spanish and apply knowledge from other domains to translation (such as health, law, business, etc.).

After successful completion, students will have knowledge of important aspects of the translation profession, such as translation techniques and strategies, textual analysis and multilingual writing skills, translation software tools, and careers within the language services industry.

The Certificate of Proficiency in Spanish Language focuses on language development and culture. This program provides students an opportunity to prove their proficiency in Spanish at an intermediate level.

Spanish Certifications

Business Spanish Qualifying Exams

Utah Valley University has been authorized by the Official Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Madrid to administer their "Business Spanish Exams." UVU is pleased to offer them to both students and faculty interested in obtaining their Certification.

Qualifying Exams:

  • Certificado Básico de Español de los Negocios
  • Certificado Superior de Español de los Negocios
  • Diploma de Español de los Negocios
  • Advanced Business Certificate by the Madrid Chamber of Commerce.

The exams are currently offered once a year in the month of April. The exams include:
  • Reading Comprehension.
  • Language Proficiency.
  • Writing proficiency.
  • An Oral Interview.

  • Cost of the exams: $170.00
  • Processing Fee: $15.00
    • (Subject to international exchange rate adjustments)

In preparation for these exams Utah Valley University is currently offering two semesters of Business Spanish: SPAN 3200 and SPAN 4200, both courses are cross listed with our International Business Program.
