Why Do You Rec? UVU Campus Recreation department celebrates healthy living with students, staff, and faculty

To not get depressed. To clear my head. To feel confident. To be healthy. These handwritten statements now fill an entire wall in UVU’s Student Life and Wellness Center (SLWC), and they all answer one simple question – “Why Do You Rec?”

“Our goal with the Why Do You Rec? campaign is to directly hear back from our students, staff, faculty, and community members,” said DaSheek Akwenye, director of Recreation & Wellness at UVU. “We want to know why engaging in recreational activities is not only important to them, but how we as a center can enhance their membership experience.”

With over 19,000 active gym memberships, the SLWC understands that the reasons people choose to exercise are as diverse as the types of exercise available. To optimize inclusivity efforts on campus, the SLWC provides a variety of fitness options that are adaptable for everyone from novice to experienced members.

The following workout resources are available through the SLWC:

·     Six-lane bowling alley
·     45-foot indoor climbing gym
·     Nine different categories of fitness classes
·     Indoor track, basketball, and volleyball courts
·     Selectorized strength equipment
·     Plate-loaded equipment
·     Cardiovascular fitness equipment
·     Certified personal trainers

“Regardless of an individual’s fitness level or sporting abilities, our department of campus recreation works hard to provide a sense of belonging,” said Akwenye. “The SLWC is here to enhance the student experience on campus through increasing student engagement and social interactions, fostering a healthy, active lifestyle, and providing an environment to help our students be successful both inside and outside of the classroom.”

If you would like to write your response to Why Do You Rec?, chalk is available at the SLWC third-floor desk.
