President Tuminez Completes Half Marathon with Students Alongside Her

President Astrid S. Tuminez completed the half marathon in June not with other formally recognized competitors — but with groups of enthusiastic UVU students.

President Astrid S. Tuminez became a runner in her 40s. She signed up for the Utah Valley Half Marathon with the hope of running with many others who had also set the goal to finish the 13.1 miles down Provo Canyon and into Utah Valley. The COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the half marathon, but it didn’t dampen the UVU leader’s resolve. She completed the half marathon in June not with other formally recognized competitors — but with groups of enthusiastic UVU students.

President Tuminez’s goal became not just to finish but to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining mental health during this challenging time. Some of those she most hoped to inspire — UVU students, faculty, and staff — turned out to inspire her during her run. She was joined by members of the university’s wrestling and track teams who laced up their running shoes to show support. The finishing time was a personal best for the president, and a reminder to all to take exceptional care of themselves and each other.
