UVU’s 79th commencement and convocation ceremonies, honoring the largest graduating class in the school’s history — 6,410 graduates earning a total of 6,840 degrees and certificates — will be celebrated “drive-thru” and “drive-in” style to comply with COVID-19 social-distancing guidelines. All events will be held on the evening of Aug. 19, 2020. Convocations begin at 5 p.m., and commencement begins at 8:15 p.m. (with pre-show entertainment from 7:30-8:15 p.m.).

Graduates will line up in parade-like fashion in their vehicles in designated campus parking lots organized by their respective colleges and schools. They will drive to a pre-selected location in the parking lots where graduates will exit their vehicles one at a time, step onto a Wolverine-green carpet in front of a UVU backdrop to receive their diplomas from their deans as their names are read over a loudspeaker.

Each graduate, accompanied by any of their family and friends, will be allowed one vehicle, in the “drive-thru” graduation to help maintain proper COVID-19 precautions. The eight convocations will occur simultaneously by college and school.

After the convocations, graduates, their families, and friends are invited to a “drive-in” commencement in the parking lot on the west side of the Fulton Library. Commencement will begin with a performance from a well-known Utah band that will be announced that night, followed by a 45-minute commencement ceremony.

As part of commencement, honorary degrees will be bestowed on Daniel W. Campbell, business and education leader; Gail Miller, owner of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies and chair of the Board of Directors of the Larry H. Miller Management Corporation; and David O. Ulrich, business leader and management consultant. Miller will deliver the keynote address, and UVU President Astrid S. Tuminez will give closing remarks. Fireworks will punctuate the conclusion of the commencement ceremony.
