The 30th annual President’s Scholarship Ball at Utah Valley University (UVU), titled “Miracles in the Making,” is a throwback to a simpler time when jitterbug was the dance, and drive-ins were hopping on a Saturday night. The event on September 26 will be held drive-in-style in the L4 parking lot, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at UVU’s Orem Campus. The hope is that the blast from the past will raise money to secure hundreds of students’ futures by funding scholarships.

COVID-19 made it impossible to hold the usual black-tie gala event, historically frequented by business and community leaders, friends of UVU, and students. But this year, in an act of innovation, tuxedos and gowns will be replaced by poodle skirts and bobbysocks, rolled-up jeans, and sweaters. President Astrid S. Tuminez said it's all for a very important cause.

“There are currently 262 presidential scholars. Their educational opportunities come from the generosity of those who attend the annual Scholarship Ball. They represent great promise, having earned the highest academic achievements and exhibiting motivation and persistence. They come to us with ambitious dreams, but a lack of funding,” Tuminez said. “Because nearly 80% of our students remain in Utah 10 years after graduation, supporting them is an investment in their families and the state's future.”

Since its inception in 1990, the Scholarship Ball has raised more than $3 million for scholarships. “I am astounded by the generosity and vision of the people who attend the ball. They genuinely love and care about the students we serve,” Tuminez said.

Utah Valley University is inviting anyone who would like to participate. Limited tickets are still available online. The usual dinner prepared by the UVU Culinary Arts Institute will be a little different this year, with hors d’oeuvres and appetizers served in a picnic bag and three more courses served in carhop fashion. The top-notch entertainment will reflect current health and safety protocols.
