Global Economist and Best-Selling Author Dr. Dambisa Moyo to Speak at UVU as Part of the Presidential Lecture Series

The strategically thinking global economist and bestselling author of several books including “How Boards Work: And How They Can Work Better in a Chaotic World,” and “Edge of Chaos: Why Democracy is Failing to Deliver Economic Growth – And How to Fix It,” will lecture at Utah Valley University as part of the UVU Presidential Lecture Series on Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, at 11:30 a.m.

   

The strategically thinking global economist and bestselling author of several books including “How Boards Work: And How They Can Work Better in a Chaotic World,” and “Edge of Chaos: Why Democracy is Failing to Deliver Economic Growth — And How to Fix It,” will lecture at Utah Valley University as part of the UVU Presidential Lecture Series on Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, at 11:30 a.m.

“Dr. Moyo is an expert thinker, and her thoughts influence decision-makers around the world. Part of going to a university is learning how to think critically and challenge your own beliefs,” said President Tuminez. “Our students will greatly benefit from the words of Dr. Moyo because she can help them understand that their thoughts have the potential to change the world.”

Hailing from Zambia, Moyo attended and graduated from American University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and an MBA. She went on to get an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Oxford. 

Having worked at Goldman Sachs and the World Bank for nearly a decade, Moyo developed opinions and ideas that paved the path for her to become a pre-eminent thinker and trusted advisor in macroeconomics, geopolitics, and technology. She serves on several global corporate boards, including 3M Corporation, Chevron, Conde Nast, and the Oxford University Endowment Investment Committee. 

Moyo is the author of four New York Times bestselling books, including “Dead Aid: Why Aid Is Not Working and How There Is a Better Way For Africa,” “How the West Was Lost: Fifty Years of Economic Folly – And the Stark Choices that Lie Ahead,” “Winner Take All: China’s Race for Resources and What it Means for the World,” and “Edge of Chaos: Why Democracy is Failing to Deliver Economic Growth – and How to Fix It.” She also recently released her first business book titled “How Boards Work: And How They Can Work Better in a Chaotic World.” 

Moyo is the recipient of several awards, including Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World, Handelsblatt 25 Most Influential Economists, and the Oprah Winfrey “O” Power List. In her spare time, Moyo enjoys running marathons. 

The Presidential Lecture Series is sponsored by the Office of the President and the Office of Engaged Learning. International scholars, experts, and talents are invited to speak to the UVU faculty, staff, and students in an effort to enhance the academic exchange on campus.
