OREM, Utah — The Melisa Nellesen Center for Autism at Utah Valley University (UVU) will celebrate its fifth annual Super Spectrum Showcase this month. The art show gives artists on the autism spectrum the unique opportunity to share their art in a virtual gallery for their friends, family, and community to enjoy.

In preparation for the event, artists of all ages submitted entries in several mediums. Over the past four years, dozens of artists have collectively submitted hundreds of art pieces — including paintings, sculptures, photographs, and jewelry. This year, there were more than 230 submissions from almost 70 artists.

“The Super Spectrum Showcase provides opportunities for artists to communicate their unique perspectives creatively and magnifies the voices of many who may not otherwise share their talents. This is our second year providing a digital format for the show,” said Laurie Bowen, associate director of the Melisa Nellesen Center for Autism.

Individuals with autism have a range of abilities. Communicating thoughts or feelings can be challenging, but art is a medium that allows them to communicate in another way.

“Artistic expression is important for everyone. Everyone needs to find some kind of creative outlet. But it’s also a great opportunity to share feelings, to share ideas, to show strengths, to present a worldview that might be different, and to just share your talents with the community,” said Jane Carlson, director of the autism center.

You can view this year’s art show by visiting the digital gallery.
