Hope, not “yielding to fear,” is how Utah Valley University will forge ahead into 2022, President Astrid S. Tuminez said at this year’s State of the University address, delivered today in the Noel and Carrie Vallejo Auditorium in the newly opened Scott C. Keller Building on UVU’s Orem Campus.

Her address highlighted UVU’s accomplishments over the past year, including the completion of two new campus buildings, new educational programs, growing civic engagement, athletic and academic awards, the securing of lucrative grants, and increased student retention.

In addition to the university’s past achievements, President Tuminez outlined the university’s dreams for the future. “Our dreams and our hard work are grounded in our mission and our core values,” she said.

She also spoke of the resiliency of UVU students and their tenacity in achieving their own individual dreams, sharing the emotional stories of those who faced tremendous odds but succeeded because of their hard work and the opportunities provided by Utah Valley University.

Working together, President Tuminez said, UVU will continue to offer exceptional learning that unlocks the potential of students while serving the community, as detailed in the university’s Vision 2030 initiative. Its tenets include enhancing student success, improving educational accessibility, and strengthening community partnerships.

President Tuminez closed her remarks by addressing the importance of hope when achieving our dreams. “When we dream, we hope. When we hope, we act. When we act, we can solve our problems together. Hope is a superpower. Hope is saying that your efforts are worth something.”
