Utah Valley University has its first NCAA Division I national champion.

UVU senior Everlyn Kemboi won the 10,000-meter final at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas on June 8, defeating the previous champion, Alabama’s Mercy Chelangat, as well as Utah’s Emily Venters. Kemboi’s time of 32:39.08 set a new facility record.

"It's insane. I don't even believe I won,” Kemboi said. “I'm just thankful and grateful. I've been waiting for this time. I've been patient, trusted my training, and trusted my coaches.”

Kemboi is from Metkei, Kenya, and joined the Wolverines after a multi-All-American career at the junior college level with El Paso Community College. Off the track, she has earned a bachelor's degree in public health at UVU.

"When she made those moves over the last 1,200, I knew she was going to win it,” UVU head coach Scott Houle said. “How awesome it was to watch someone from Utah Valley University bring home a national championship.”
