Dynamic dance competitions, powerful drum contests, and a vibrant cultural tradition will be on display at the annual Utah Valley University (UVU) Powwow from November 21-22 at the UCCU Center on UVU’s Orem Campus.
A celebration and appreciation of Native American heritage and Indigenous people, this year’s Powwow is expected to be the biggest in its history, with more than 2,500 attendees anticipated. Past versions of the event have been held in UVU’s Grand Ballroom and Lockhart Arena, but this year’s Powwow required the larger space that the UCCU Center provides.
“The UVU Powwow is an amazing tradition that celebrates Native culture, resilience, and community,” said Justin Allison, UVU director of Native Excellence and Tribal Engagement. “It has served as a space for connection and learning, bringing together students, families, and tribal nations to honor the rich heritage of Indigenous peoples on campus at UVU, which affirms UVU’s commitment to Native American communities and Tribal engagement.”
The Powwow will feature three Grand Entry highlights on November 21 at 6 pm and November 22 at 12 pm and 6 pm. This free community event invites everyone to learn about and appreciate Native American heritage while supporting Indigenous artisans and small businesses through the arts and crafts vendor booths.
In addition to the Powwow, UVU will host a Native American Storytelling Night on November 19 at 6 pm in the Grand Ballroom.
