Utah Valley University’s (UVU) Center for Constitutional Studies hosted the second annual Summer Civic Institute as part of the Civic Thought & Leadership Initiative.

Utah Valley University’s (UVU) Center for Constitutional Studies hosted the second annual Summer Civic Institute as part of the Civic Thought & Leadership Initiative. The rigorous one-week seminar held the first week of June gathered the best students from Utah's universities (advanced undergraduate, graduate, and professional) for the study and discussion of the American political and constitutional traditions.
On the precipice of the 250th birthday of the United States, this year’s Summer Civic Institute focused on the philosophical, political, and historical significance of the Declaration of Independence.
“At UVU we aim to equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and virtues necessary for good citizenship,” said Matthew Brogdon, senior director of the Center for Constitutional Studies. “This intensive workshop pushed the leaders of tomorrow to examine the past and unpack one of the most inspiring and powerful statements of political principles in human history.”
Each day of the seminar included primary-source discussions led by distinguished faculty from institutions across the United States, as well as activities outside the classroom such as hiking and film screenings. Participants received a $1,000 stipend, meals, and lodging during seminar week.
The UVU Center for Constitutional Studies is a nonpartisan, academic institute that promotes the instruction, study, and research of constitutionalism. The Center examines important constitutional issues found at the intersection of political thought, public policy, religion, law, history, and economics. The Center employs a multidisciplinary approach to equip a new generation of citizens and leaders with a broad understanding of the ideas and practices critical to the perpetuation of constitutional government, ordered liberty, and the rule of law.
