The Power of Pivoting With Self-Awareness

Matthew Whitaker wanted to become an actor.

While studying drama at Brigham Young University, he realized he wasn’t fully comfortable acting in front of the camera. Rather than forcing a career path that didn’t quite fit, he chose to pivot and pursue screenwriting and film directing instead. This life-changing choice taught him the importance of maintaining both self-awareness and the willingness to adjust course.

“Put the Hammer Away”: Letting Stories Speak

Throughout his lecture, Matthew emphasized his belief in allowing people to discover meaning for themselves. He shared a principle he lives by as a filmmaker, which he calls “put the hammer away.” Rather than forcing a message onto an audience, he strives to tell stories that allow viewers to draw their own lessons and insights.

Matthew described how his career in film began with documentary work, particularly projects focused on World War II. While working on those films, one story stayed with him. In 2005, he felt a strong and unmistakable impression that he was meant to bring that story to life in a different way. That prompting led him to begin writing what would eventually become Truth and Treason, and he soon felt impressed that he should direct the film himself.

Partnership, Faith, and Long-Term Vision

Trusting that impression, Matthew made the decision to fully commit. He left the security of his other job, assembled a strong team and began the process of developing the feature film. With support from crowd investors and encouragement from those around him, he embraced the risks necessary to see the project through.

Matthew encouraged students to trust their instincts — and then act. He spoke about the enduring power of film and storytelling, expressing his belief that there will always be a place for meaningful stories in our lives. He emphasized the importance of taking smart risks, remaining open to pivoting when needed and moving forward with faith and persistence.

A powerful theme throughout his remarks was the importance of partnership. Matthew spoke with deep gratitude for his wife, Nicia, and her unwavering support throughout the filmmaking journey. He shared her reflection that the experience had been “peace-filled,” something they attributed to mutual support, aligned goals and shared belief. Matthew emphasized the importance of choosing a partner who believes in you and is willing to walk alongside you through uncertainty.

His message reinforced that meaningful work often begins by listening closely, trusting impressions and having the courage to step forward even when the path ahead is not fully clear.
