Growing up in an isolated fundamentalist community, Ashlee Barlow never thought college would be a part of her future.

To celebrate this year’s commencement, Utah Valley University is sharing stories of student achievement, perseverance, and success.
Growing up in an isolated fundamentalist community, Ashlee Barlow never thought college would be a part of her future. After completing an associate degree in dental hygiene, Barlow said she is grateful for the confidence UVU has given her.
“When I decided I wanted to do dental hygiene, it terrified me,” she said. “I had no idea where to start, what to expect, or if I was even capable of following through. I think I am most proud of the way I haven't looked back. I jumped in with both feet and never stopped treading.”
Barlow said this is her first significant academic success, and UVU helped her manage the “whirlwind” journey. She expressed gratitude for her professors, advisors, and classmates who bonded with her in difficult times.
“Professionally, I have worked multiple jobs to pay for school and to get me here, but no specific ‘success’ stories,” she said. “Now I can see the finish line, and it feels so good knowing that I can do whatever I put my mind to.”
