MEDICAL CANNABIS NOTIFICATION

In accordance with UVU policy 548 applicants to clinical programs at UVU must pass a drug test.  Students will be tested upon acceptance to a clinical program. The responsibility for passing the drug test resides with the student regardless of possession of a medical cannabis card that is legal in any state. Clinical programs reserve the right to repeat drug tests at any time during the clinical program.

Congratulations on completing the prerequisite courses and on your efforts toward becoming a nurse. Even though not all candidates will be accepted, we appreciate you applying to Utah Valley University. Please read all of the following information carefully so you will not miss any critical information.

Admission to the UVU Nursing Program is contingent upon satisfactory results of both a federal criminal background check and a drug screen. Information on how to obtain both reports will be provided upon acceptance. The Department of Nursing has sole discretion to deny acceptance based on information contained in either of these two reports.

The UVU Nursing program is a very rigorous, time-intensive program. Students are expected to attend all classes, labs and clinical assignments as scheduled. Classes, labs and clinical are not flexible and if missed could jeopardize student success in the program. If considering working during the program, considerable flexibility will be required in your work schedule. The Nursing Program requires a full commitment each semester, from the first day of class until the last day of class.

NOTE: If you have already completed an ASN program and have your RN license, please request information for the RN-BSN program from the Department of Nursing

About this application

If you are not coming from MTECH, please use the ASN application found in the first section on the programs and degrees page.

2Complete UVU Department of Nursing prerequisite classes which are
  • CHEM 1110 Elem Chemistry
  • PSY 1100 Human Development Life Span
  • NUTR 1020 Foundations of Human Nutrition
  • ENGH 1005 Lit & Comp Across Context OR ENGL 1010 Intro to Writing

  • ZOOL 2420/2425 Human Physiology with lab
  • *BIOL 1610 College Biology I

*C- grade for BIOL 1610 and Math QL prerequisite classes is acceptable. These two classes are not figured into the prerequisite classes GPA.

Prerequisite classes must have a final grade of a B- or better and cannot be repeated more than once within the past 5 years. If a course was repeated, the second grade will be used.

BIOL 1610 is a prerequisite for ZOOL 2320, ZOOL 2420, and MICRO 2060. If these classes are taken at a different institution that does not require BIOL 1610 as a prerequisite, then BIOL 1610 is not required for application. However, students who have not taken a 3rd science course may need an additional science course for BSN graduation. It is recommended that BIOL 1610 be completed prior to applying.

QL Math courses include MAT 1030, STAT 1040 or MAT 1050. The QL requirement can also be completed by receiving a 26 or higher on the ACT. (NOTE: A second math that includes statistics is required for BSN completion.)

MTECH-LPN graduates who have completed the UVU nursing prerequisite courses are guaranteed an interview for the UVU Nursing Program.

4Apply to Utah Valley University

Acceptance to UVU is required prior to applying to the MTECH-LPN to UVU ASN program. This includes transferring in all credits from other institutions. Application to the University can be done online at the UVU admissions page. All UVU deadlines and fees apply. **UVU applications have their own set of dealines that are earlier than the Nursing Program application deadlines, so be sure to pay attention to those.** Students are encouraged to apply to UVU early so all transfer credits can be evaluated before UVU Department of Nursing admission deadlines.  Student will be required to meet all UVU requirements for graduation.

5Apply to MTECH-LPN to UVU ASN program

The LPN application can be started by filling out the form at the bottom of this page. All applications are submitted online. After being accepted to UVU, a nursing application must be submitted to the UVU Department of Nursing.

To be eligible to submit this application students must have completed steps 1 - 4 above by the application deadline. A copy of the MTECH Certification must be attached to the application.  Please read steps 6-10 before filling out the application.

6Transferring Credits to UVU

It is your responsibility to have official transcripts of all previous college course work sent to the UVU Admissions Office. Transcripts accepted as official by that office are evaluated and posted on your UVU academic record. This may take up to 3 weeks. Transfer classes must be evaluated and posted on your UVU account by the application deadline. Plan accordingly.

All transfer credits are evaluated by the Transfer Credit Office only, NOT BY THE NURSING DEPARTMENT. The Department of Nursing DOES NOT process and/or post ANY transfer credits to your record! It is your responsibility to make sure your courses have been articulated before the end of the application deadline.

7Prerequisite Course Work Information

All prerequisite course work must be complete and final grades posted on your official UVU Academic Record, with the minimum grade requirement, by the application deadline. The Nursing Admissions Committee WILL NOT attempt to locate missing grades. It is YOUR responsibility to ensure all grade information has been submitted with your nursing application by the deadline, in order for it to be available when the review of applications begins.

8Interview Process

Candidates are selected to interview for a position in the UVU Nursing Program. The interview process is standardized to ensure that each candidate has an equal opportunity to be objectively evaluated. If you are selected to interview, read the email carefully and follow the directions. Interviews are held on the UVU West Campus. The interview process takes approximately 2 hours to complete. An interview does not guarantee acceptance to the UVU Nursing Program. An applicant can only be interviewed twice in a 5-year time frame. Interview day and time are assigned. All applicants will be notified if they have been selected for an interview via uvu.edu email within 3 to 7 business days of the closing of the application.

9Acceptable College Credits

Although there are a variety of ways to obtain college credit, some are appropriate to meet the nursing prerequisites while others are not. Please be aware of the following credits and/or grades, and how they may affect your eligibility to apply:

  • Repeating Course Work: Repeating a course for a better grade is an option and does not affect your UVU nursing application adversely; however, only one repeat, per course, in a 5-year time frame will be allowed. The second attempt is used for the application. Once a course is repeated, grades for the first attempt will not be used to satisfy any degree requirement. Therefore, if the grade for your most recent attempt falls below a B- grade, you are ineligible to apply.
  • Pass/Fail or Credit/No Credit Grades: Only letter grades are accepted for all prerequisite class grades, except MATH QL. UVU will accept a CLEP test of MATH 1050, or QL credit given by the University for an ACT score of 26 or higher.
  • AP Credits: AP scores of 3, 4 or 5 can be accepted for prerequisite requirements. These must be posted to your transcript as credit. For purposes of calculating the GPA, a score of 3 = B+, 4 = A-, and 5 = A.
  • Course Substitutions: In order to give students the best opportunity to have a competitive GPA, there are some courses which may be used as a substitution for a prerequisite if a higher grade was received in the substituting course and the grade in the prerequisite course meets nursing standard minimum grade. The following are examples of appropriate substitutions:
    • ENGL 1010: If ENGL 2010 or 2020 has been completed with a better grade than the ENGL 1010, that course may be substituted for the prerequisite ENGL 1010 course.
    • MATH QL: Any higher-level math class, which required College Algebra as a prerequisite (except Trigonometry) can be substituted for the prerequisite Math QL course.
All other substitutions will be determined on an individual basis by the Department of Nursing Admission Committee. Any questions about the filling requirements and the application process should be directed to the pre-nursing advisors.
10Acceptance Information

Acceptance is contingent upon the following:

  • Submitting all requested documentation by the deadline.
  • Completing required immunizations, current CPR certification, and physical exam by the deadline.
  • Providing satisfactory results of both a federal background check and drug screen. The background check will include a record of employment and all non-juvenile arrests and convictions, including sex offenses. UVU has sole discretion to deny entrance based upon the information contained in either of these two reports.
  • MANDATORY attendance at the NURSING ORIENTATION Meeting. If you are late or unable to attend, your position will be forfeited and given to an alternate candidate. Due to changes in the UVU registration process, students will be able to register for nursing courses before orientation. However, failure to attend the nursing orientation will forfeit your position in the Nursing Program and result in the nursing classes being dropped.
  • Due to limited space within the Nursing Program, not all qualified applicants will be accepted.
  • The Department of Nursing reserves the right to disqualify any student guilty of any form of misrepresentation and/or misconduct.
