Religion and Media

This symposium will address questions related to religion in the media and examine some implications for advancing civil discourse and debate. Scholars and practitioners from a variety of disciplines will explore questions such as 1) how is religion represented in the media?, 2) how do these representations affect civil society and public discourse?, and 3) how do religious communities utilize media to advance their visions for society?

Biographical Information 

John Carlson is Director of Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict and associate professor of religious studies at Arizona State University.  His research explores how religious and moral inquiry informs and invigorates our understanding of political life. He has written on issues of war and peace, religion and violence, justice and human rights, and democracy and civic life. He is co-editor of, and contributor to, three books including From Jeremiad to Jihad: Religion, Violence, and America (California, 2012) and The Sacred and the Sovereign: Religion and International Politics (Georgetown, 2003).

 

Joel Campbell is a visiting associate professor in Communication at Brigham Young University-Hawaii. He is a retired associate professor at Brigham Young University’s School of Communications, where he worked taught courses communications studies and journalism. He is the former head of the Religion and Media Interest Group of AEJMC and former Freedom of Information Chair for the National Society of Professional Journalists.  

 

David Noyce is Managing Editor at the Salt Lake Tribune where he has worked since 1984. He oversees coverage ranging from local government and west-side issues to growth, development and housing. In addition, he directs religion reporting, co-hosts the award-winning “Mormon Land” podcast with Peggy Fletcher Stack and writes the Mormon Land newsletter. 

 

Kristin Peterson is Associate Professor of Communication at Boston College where she teaches courses related to the intersections of media and religion. Her book, Unruly Souls: The Digital Activism of Muslim and Christian Feminists (Rutgers, 2022), examines how digital spaces facilitate intersectional feminist activism within Evangelical Christian and Muslim American communities. She is a board member of the International Society for Media, Religion, and Culture, and member of the Board of Representatives for the Boston Consortium for Graduate Studies in Gender, Culture, Women & Sexuality. 

 

David Scott has studied the intersection of religion, media, and culture for over three decades. He research is published in numerous books and journals. Among them: Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, Critical Studies in Media Communication, Journal of Magazine and New Media Research, Journal of Media and Religion. He is currently the editor of Journal of Media and Religion
