UVU Crime Statistics are collected and reported to state and federal agencies to help identify crime trends and support campus safety initiatives.
The data submitted to state and federal agencies is available to the pubic. UVU submits National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) data monthly to the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI), which forwards the information to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Crime Statistics Resources
In addition to supplying NIBRS data, UVU reports crime and fire statistics to the U.S. Department of Education. These statistics are available through the Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool, which provides customized reports related to campus crime and fire data for colleges and universities nationwide.
Safety Tips
Even in Utah, crimes occur every day. Many crimes are crimes of opportunity and can often be prevented by taking a few simple precautions.
Residence Safety
Most residential burglaries occur when homes or apartments are unattended and doors are left unlocked. Make it a habit to lock doors and windows, even when you are home. Short trips away from your residence provide enough time for someone to enter and take valuables.
Vehicle Safety
Lock your vehicle and remove valuables whenever possible. Criminals often target vehicles containing visible items such as electronics, backpacks, wallets, purses, or even loose change. If you must leave valuables in your vehicle, secure them in the trunk or out of sight before arriving at you destination.
Parties and Social Events
Attend events with people you know and trust. Never leave drinks unattended and only accept beverages from trusted sources. Remain aware of your surroundings and have a plan for getting home safely.
On-Campus Safety
Do not leave valuables unattended. Laptops, backpacks, books, phones, and other personal items are frequently stolen when left unattended, even for a short period of time. When using campus facilities, keep your belongings with you at all times.
Report Suspicious Activity
Report crimes, suspicious activity, and safety concerns as soon as possible. Prompt reporting allows officers to respond quickly, preserve evidence, and assist victims more effectively.
