about the performance

In Good Faith is an original work that explores the complicated relationship many people have with religion, family, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hear first-hand accounts from member and former members about how they are meeting this new challenge and how they talk with their families about their faith disagreements.

Content Warning: This is a devised ethnographic performance. Verbatim excerpts from interviews with research subjects furnish the performance text. As a result, our show contains sensitive content, such as mentions of abuse, that may be disturbing to some audience members.

biographies

Brielle Szendre

Brielle Szendre is ecstatic to be in her first production at UVU. Brielle has also been in several shows in her home state, Washington. She has been in West Wide Story twice and it has a special place in her heart. Her fondest play memory is doing a one act in high school titled, Meet the Roommates. She has also been in shows such as Beauty and the Beast, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Sound of Music.

Caleb Voss

Caleb is excited to be doing this project of In Good Faith, directed by Kim Abunawara. Caleb is a senior here at UVU and has been in productions such as Biscus in Is There An Actor In The House and Dad in Mockingbird. When Caleb is not in rehearsal, he loves practicing Spanish on Duolingo and spending time with family, and their pet dog, Toby.

Kara McCarthy

Chris Vlamakis is a senior Stage Manager in the BFA Theatrical Design and Production at UVU and this is his final mainstage production with the department. He has spent most of his life surrounded by the performing arts, sparked by his mother’s singing and work in local community theatre in his hometown of Helper, Utah. Without the support of both of his parents, he would not have been able to go to school. Chris spends his non- existent free-time playing games with his friends and trying his best to support his friends, who have become his family, in the arts.
Although he doesn’t say it out loud enough, he dedicates each and every project he has been a part of to his brother Stephen “Bub” Vlamakis. This project has been a hilarious blessing to be a part of and he asks you also join him this April for his directorial debut of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead.

Leah Carr

Leah Carr is a junior in the BFA Acting program here at UVU. She loves acting in weird, new projects such as Relative Space, a musical where the actors don’t sing (cRazy) which she performed over the summer alongside her professors, Liz Golden and Chase Grant. Previously at UVU, she has performed in student-written plays “Two Mice” and “Love, Dad,” as Charlotte in a TYA version of Charlotte’s Web that toured at elementary schools around Utah county, and in student-written and produced films for the DGM department. She is now on to her latest uNUsuAL show, In Good Faith! She has loved learning Brechtian Ethnographic performance-style theatre and she is so excited for you to see the show!

Marissa Haines

She has loved being apart of this project and she loves it so much that she is using it as her honors capstone project through the UVU Honors program.

Preston Oschenhurt

Preston Ochsenhirt is a Junior in the BFA Musical Theater program for his second bachelor’s degree here at Utah Valley University, where his is also minoring in History and Psychology. His first bachelor’s degree was in Commercial Music and minoring in Theater and Digital Media. In Good Faith will be his 3rd theatrical production in the program, and his 6th since January of 2022. Some of these include: The Last Five Years with What The Blank Entertainment, Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Renaissance Now, and with UVU, Lucky Stiff and The Diary of Anne Frank. The performing arts have been an incredible part of his life, including his tenure with the Utah Valley Institute Singers. land acknowledgment

land

Utah Valley University acknowledges that we gather on land sacred to all Indigenous people who came before us in this vast crossroads region. The University is committed to working in partnership—as enacted through education and community activities—with Utah’s Native Nations comprising: the San Juan Southern Paiute, Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, Uintah & Ouray Reservation of the Northern Ute, Skull Valley Goshute, Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation, Northwestern Band of Shoshone Nation, Hopi Tribe, Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute-White Mesa Community, and urban Indian communities. We recognize these Native Nations and their continued connections with traditional homelands, mountains, rivers, and lakes as well as their sovereign relationships with state and federal governments. We honor their collective memory and continued physical and spiritual presence. We revere their resilience and example in preserving their connections to the Creator and to all their relations, now and in the future.

With this statement comes responsibility and accountability. We resolve to follow up with actionable items to make the School of the Arts at UVU and The Noorda Center for the Performing Arts an inclusive, equitable, and just space for all. There is much work to be done, and we are committed to putting these words into practice.
