The story behind Newsies is based on real historical events surrounding the Newsies’ strike of 1899. The story was first portrayed through the 1992 film, which provided the basis for the staged musical, which premiered in 2011 and quickly gained popularity. When approached to direct this beloved piece, I found myself asking why an event that happened in New York City in 1899 has captured the hearts of todays’ audiences all over the country. What pulled at my heartstrings in this piece, was the hope that comes for tomorrow when people come together to work for the common good. It is the ability to seize the present moment, not knowing what the future holds, but knowing that what we do right now matters. This theme is carried forth by the kids and youth of this piece, driven by their conviction and energy. In a poem titled “Youth”, by Sam Ullman written in 1918, he describes youth as being more than just a number:
It is this sentiment that we must stand up for what we believe to be good, true, and beautiful that resonated so strongly with me in this piece. This theme is embodied by the Newsies who must come together, even over differences, to stand up for what they believe is right. It is my wish that this incredible company will inspire you with this story to stand up for those who don’t have a voice and work alongside those you disagree with to bring about more love and hope for the future. |

daysha lassiter
Medda Larkin/Nun
“Music is a part of your life” are the words to live by. They were the words uttered
every day at the end of band class and they inspired a 13-year-old girl growing up
in Daytona Beach, Florida. Three decades and many life experiences later, those words
are still true. A transplant to Utah, Daysha made Utah County her home in 2012 to
study classical voice at The University of Utah. Her breakout role into musical theater
was “Nell” in Fats Waller’s Ain’t Misbehavin’ (WVC Arts, 2020). She’s since covered
ground in a myriad of genres. From Menken’s Beauty & the Beast to Little Shop of Horrors,
Daysha aims to be versatile and unlimited. Her goal is to meet people where they are
through intersectionality and Southern charm. Her newest role is “Mama” to Shepard,
her only child, who frequents the theater and seems to follow in mom’s footsteps.

andrew domyan
Assistant Sound Designer
Andrew has never sold a newspaper in his life, and that’s not about to change, because
his job here is to assist the Sound Designer, not the newspaper…designers? He did
first see Newsies in 9th grade and thought it was the greatest thing since sliced
bread, and he is so excited to spend half his time on this show doing Assistant Sound
Designer-esque things and the other half singing along to all the songs veryyyy quietly.
Previously, his work (and sometimes his sing along skills) have been heard throughout UVU Theatre, on shows such as Machinal, Lady M, Ghost Quartet, Is There An Actor In The House?, Persuasion, and The Heidi Chronicles, as well as several local area productions, including Creekside Theatre Fest’s Relative Space and School of Rock. In the near future, he’ll be filling the stages of Jekyll & Hyde at West Valley Arts and Little Women at UVU with many more sounds (not to mention noises, rackets, notes, jangles, and maybe even sonorities), so stay tuned (yes, pun intended).
In between shows, he spends his time justifying his Philosophy degree by philosophizing on the nature of sound as an aesthetic phenomenon in theater. So if you want a headache, come find him and he’ll do a wonderful job of pretending he actually knows what those words mean.
