Getting Started

How do I register for accommodations?

To register for accommodations, start by applying for accommodations through the Office of Accessibility Services. You will then meet with an accessibility advisor to discuss your needs and determine appropriate accommodations.

Who do I talk to about assistive technology?

Start by meeting with an accessibility advisor. Once your accommodation needs have been reviewed, you can contact the Accessible Technology Center at [email protected] or book an appointment with someone in the ATC.

Can I receive assistive technology before the semester starts?

Yes. To receive assistive technology before the semester begins, meet with an accessibility advisor as early as possible so your accommodations can be approved and any technology needs can be reviewed.

What do I do if something in my class is not accessible?

  • If content like provided documents or videos are not accessible, please reach out to [email protected] for assistance .
  • For issues with adaptive seating and desks, please reach out to your accessibility advisor. If adaptive furniture has been placed but does not meet your needs, please contact [email protected].
  • For other accessibility barriers, please contact Accessibility Services or fill out the Access Barrier Report Form.

Assistive Technology Services

Who can use assistive technology options?

UVU offers some assistive technology tools free to all students, including Read&Write and OrbitNote. These tools may be especially helpful for students with disabilities, learning differences, long-term conditions, or injuries that make studying or accessing the university more difficult. Meeting with Accessibility Services can help determine what support is needed.

How do I schedule an appointment with the ATC?

The best way to schedule a meeting with someone in the Accessible Technology Center is to book an appointment through Bookings. If bookings does not work, please send an email to [email protected]

Software and Tools

How do I use Read&Write?

Read&Write is available for all UVU students. Start by downloading Read&Write for your device. It is available for Windows, Mac, and Google Chrome. When signing in, be sure to use your Microsoft account. You can then use the training materials for your device to learn the basics and explore available features.

How do I use Genio?

Accessibility Services offers learning workshops to help students get started with Genio. Contact the Office of Accessibility Services to find out when workshops are available. You can also review the Genio getting started materials for additional support.

How do I use Orbit Note?

To use Orbit Note, first install Orbitnote and sign in with your Microsoft account. Please note that Orbit Note only works with PDF files

Equatio is available on multiple platforms. To get started, choose the guide that matches your device or browser and follow the setup instructions for that version:

Where can I find instructions for assistive technology tools?

For help using assistive technology tools, contact the Accessibility Technology Center (ATC) at [email protected]. You can also find additional instructions and product guides from the software publishers.

Alternate Formats and Textbooks

How do I get my books in an alternate format?

To request your books in an alternate format, review and complete the Alternative Format Request steps. If you need help with the process, contact the ATC for support.

What alternate formats are available?

Available alternate formats include PDF, Word, ePUB, print, enlarged print, MP3, braille, and tactile graphics. Additional formats may also be available based on your needs and can be discussed with the ATC.

Do I need an approved accommodation to get print books covered?

Yes. If you would like your print books covered as an alternative format accommodation, then you would need to be approved for this. However, if you just wish to order your textbook in print instead of the digital textbook available through Wolverine Access you could work directly with the bookstore.

How do I get braille materials.

Braille materials are requested through the same process as other alternate formats. Please note that braille production typically takes more time. Once completed, braille materials can be picked up from the Office of Accessibility Services.

What are tactile graphics?

Tactile graphics are raised, textured, or embossed representations of visual information, such as maps, graphs, diagrams, and illustrations, designed for individuals who are blind or visually impaired to explore through touch.

How do I get tactile graphics?

To request tactile graphics, contact the ATC at [email protected] and provide the content you need converted. Once completed, tactile graphics can be picked up from the Office of Accessibility Services.

Captioning and Media Access

How do I get captioning for my classes?

To request captioning for your classes, contact the Deaf and Hard of Hearing office. UVU is currently working to make all course videos captioned, but because this is still in progress, captioning for specific courses may still need to be requested.

What if captions are missing or delayed?

If captions are missing or delayed, please contact the Assistive Technology Coordinator at [email protected] for help getting the captions corrected.

Who helps with expedited captioning?

For expedited captioning, please contact the Assistive Technology Coordinator at [email protected] for assistance.

Equipment and Physical Access

What equipment can be checked out?

UVU is currently compiling a list of equipment available for checkout. In the meantime, please work with your accessibility advisor and the OAS front desk to ask about available equipment and the checkout process.

How do I request adaptive desks and seating?

To request adaptive desks or seating, contact your accessibility advisor. They can help review your needs and coordinate appropriate arrangements.

After Graduation

Can I keep school-provided assistive technology after graduation?

No. School-provided assistive technology must be returned after graduation. Assistive technology purchased by the student may be kept. Access to university-provided software will be removed soon after graduation.
