The proposed program is an educational program to Cuba providing the students with a first-hand experience with a culture, society, and political system that is very different from the ones with which they are familiar. They will study the blending of African traditions with Spanish traditions, experiment a unique Cuban political system, and see a life-style that is non-materialistic. It is an exploration into a different society and into the students' own identities.
The program is sponsored by Peace and Justice Studies and the History and Political Science Department with four primary goals. First, the students will be exposed to the everyday life, culture, politics, and history of Cuba. Cuba is selected because of the important ways it is distinct from the experiences of most of our students. We will study under social science, history, and political science faculty at the University of Havana with a course that will offer credit at UVU and the University of Havana. They will also engage in a personal project related to Cuba directed by the program director. We will live with Cuban families. Second, the program will provide scholars and citizens of Cuba with an opportunity to become acquainted on a face-to-face basis with students from the United States and Utah. Our past experience indicates that we create close and lasting connections with Cuban scholars. Students and faculty learn from each other. Our students are excellent examples of the positive side of the United States at a time when that is desperately needed. Third, students will engage in activities with communities in community gardens, health care facilities, schools, and NGOs to learn of their activities and support them. Fourth, students will have experiences that can be used in evaluating their own life plans and goals, in enriching their academic development and in developing skills to be included in their resumes and work skills.

Havana, with side-trips to locations of interest outside of Havana (including Santa Clara, Trinidad, and Playa Giron)

Physical requirements: Some walking will be required varying from 2-10 miles per day, but students may take taxis or public transportation when they choose.
Each international destination has its own Covid-19 rules and it is the traveler's responsibility to find out what is required. UVU will not be responsible for covering the cost of hotel quarantine or COVID testing in foreign destinations. Students may be required to test negative for COVID at their own expense by host countries as a condition for entry.

The program fee covers Salt Lake City to Havana round trip airfare, housing, some meals, course instruction, visa, museum and historic site entrance fees, in-country transportation, and international health insurance. The program fee does not include the listed Additional Estimated Costs.

Students over the age of 73 at the time of travel may be required to purchase a supplemental international health and evacuation insurance plan through GeoBlue (approx $200-$500+)
Students should be prepared to pay out-of-pocket for travel disruptions including lost luggage, possible COVID tests or quarantine stays if required by the host country for entry or exit, missed flights, etc.
All students are required to pay a $75 non-refundable application fee .
*UVU study abroad tuition is charged as an additional study abroad fee in your student account. It is separate from the study abroad program fee and regular UVU summer tuition. It is not factored into the "equal payment" calculation of the UVU Tuition Table. Study Abroad students are advised to only take study abroad courses during the block of their study abroad program.

UVU Faculty/Staff Dependent Tuition Waiver benefits may not be used to pay for study abroad tuition or fees.
