The Center for the Study of Ethics is a strong supporter of high school and intercollegiate ethics bowls. The intercollegiate Ethics Bowl is organized by the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) each year, with regional competitions taking place in the fall, and the national competition in the spring.
The UVU team is coached by Jeff Nielsen, who was honored with the 2025 Pat Croskery Memorial award for his exemplary contributions. UVU students can join the Ethics Bowl team by registering in PHIL 357R: Moral Reasoning Through Case Studies. This class can be repeated up to three times for credit, and continued participation on the team can be facilitated through independent study. Two years of participation on the team, with the addition of moral philosophy class (PHIL 355G) and Ethics internship, meets the requirements to graduate with an ethics minor. Students from our Ethics Bowl team have often participated in the CSE annual Student Ethics Symposium, where they present on cases relevant to each year's theme.
