Federal Graduate PLUS Loan
A Graduate PLUS Loan is a non-need-based loan that is available to graduate students to aid in paying for educational expenses.



Eligibility

  • Complete the FAFSA.
  • Complete the Graduate PLUS Loan Application.
  • Enroll in at least 4.5 eligible credit hours each semester.
  • E-sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN).
  • Must complete Student Loan Entrance Counseling for Graduate or Professional Students at STUDENTAID.GOV.
  • Must have acceptable credit. The US Department of Education will run a credit check.

Award Amount

The maximum loan amount you can borrow is the cost of attendance (determined by the school) minus any other financial aid received.

Loan Fees

There is a loan fee on all PLUS loans. The loan fee is a percentage of the loan amount and is proportionately deducted from each loan disbursement.

Disbursement

Your Graduate PLUS loan will first pay your outstanding tuition and fees.

After this balance is paid, any excess financial aid will be refunded to you either by check, or through direct deposit (which you may set up in your myUVU student account).

To Whom Your Federal Student Aid Information is Sent

Loan information is sent to the U.S. Department of Education. This information is then included in the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) and is accessible to you and authorized agencies, lenders, servicers, and institutions.

Federal Parent PLUS Loan
A Parent PLUS Loan is a non-need-based loan that is available to the parents of undergraduate students to aid in paying for educational expenses.

Eligibility

  • Complete the FAFSA.
  • The parent must be the student’s biological or adoptive mother or father. A stepparent is also eligible to borrow a PLUS loan if their income and assets would be taken into account on the student’s FAFSA application. A legal guardian is not considered a parent for this purpose.
  • The parent must complete the Parent PLUS Loan Request and upload the completed form to the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office.
  • Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 eligible credit hours. 
  • The parent must e-sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN).
  • The parent must have acceptable credit. The US Department of Education will run a credit check.

Parent PLUS loans will pay balances on the student’s account first.

Any excess will be disbursed to the parent unless otherwise notated on the Parent PLUS Loan Request.

Private Education Loans
A Private Education Loan is a loan a student may apply for directly with an education loan lender to pay for educational expenses. UVU uses a historical private education loan lender list.

Eligibility

Each lender will have different eligibility criteria. Carefully review each lenders interest rate, eligibility, and repayment criteria.

Direct Subsidized Loans
A Direct Subsidized Loan is a need-based loan that is available to undergraduate students who have demonstrated financial need.

  • Must be an undergraduate student with financial need, which is based on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
  • May not exceed the aggregate loan limits established by the US Department of Education.
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 eligible credit hours.
  • Must complete Student Loan Entrance Counseling at STUDENTAID.GOV.
  • Must e-sign Master Promissory Note (MPN).

Direct Unsubsidized Loans
Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available to undergraduate and graduate students; there is no requirement to demonstrate financial need. Interest accrues throughout the life of the loan, and the student is responsible for the interest during all periods.

Continued Eligibility

  • Complete a new FAFSA each award year.
  • Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress each semester.
  • Meet all other eligibility requirements.
  • You may not exceed your Direct Loan Aggregate Loan Limits.
  • E-sign an MPN if it has expired.

Exit Loan Counseling

If a student who received federal loans withdraws, drops below half time enrollment, or graduates, they are required to complete Exit Loan Counseling at STUDENTAID.GOV.
