I am a first-generation African-American honors college student here at Utah Valley University. I am entering my senior year and last semester studying Elementary Education.
The African Diaspora Initiative Scholarship has been a tremendous help to my financial stresses while in my last year of college. In the Elementary Education Program, you are required to student teach your last semester. This requires you to be at an assigned elementary school during teacher contract hours to complete the licensing. Therefore, this last semester I will not be able to work and earn income. This scholarship will help me pay for tuition, living expenses, school supplies, and college fees. It is such a blessing.
After graduating with my bachelor's degree, I hope to be an elementary school teacher in grades Kindergarten-2nd. After a couple years of teaching under my belt I hope to get my master's degree in Education Administration to be a principal or administrator. My dream is to either open my own school or be a principal at a school that consists of educating students who are low-income students of color. I hope to be able to serve and educate the Africa Diaspora in my education career.
I am so grateful for ADI and the donors that made it possible to help my financial burdens so I can graduate and fulfil my education dreams. The support really helps me to feel that people are cheering for me and want me to be successful, especially in the diaspora at UVU.
I have always known that I wanted to be a social worker. As I have grown I have realized in order to accomplish that dream I would have to get through a lot of hurdles. As an African American woman, I had never seen a social worker/therapist that looked like me in Utah. I didn't know if it was even possible. As I continued to work up the courage to pursue my dream I also realized the financial sacrifices that I would have to make to be able to pay for my education. As I have worked full time while attending college full time, I have constantly been worried about how to make my next payment. By receiving this scholarship I was able to actually focus on my education rather than how I would pay for it. I am so grateful for this blessing.
I am a first-generation Haitian American and college student and I am a sophomore here at UVU studying psychology and autism studies.
The African Diaspora Initiative scholarship has really helped me in numerous ways. I was able to achieve new academic goals this last year and bring my GPA up. I was was able to release the mental and financial burdens and stress of having to pay for extra class materials, textbooks and labs and more. It allowed me to be prepared for the semester and be able to really focus on my learning and education instead of stressing over the costs of things.
I hope after completing my undergrad degree here at UVU that I am able to go to medical school and someday open my own clinic providing quality and affordable mental health care, as well as autism testing, treatment and research along with much more to really help minority communities.
I am incredibly grateful for this scholarship and the donors that made it possible for me to be able to continue to receive an education in a field that I’m passionate about at a school that I really love.
