Portuguese Degrees

English Speakers, with no previous knowledge of Portuguese (or Spanish), start in PORT1010 – that's our beginner's class.

Spanish Speakers start in PORT2010. Not only this will save you 2 semesters of classes, but is an accelerated course that will build on the language skills you already have to enable you to converse in Portuguese within a few weeks!!

If you lived 2 years abroad, start in PORT3050. This is a review of Advanced Grammar, as well as reading and comprehension of literary and formal texts. It's the gateway for all Advanced classes, and the first one required for a Minor in Foreign Languages.

Utah Valley University has the privilege of being one of four American institutions to offer the Celpe-Bras, and the only one on the West Coast. This prestigious proficiency exam is administered by the Brazilian Ministry of Education and is required for acceptance in many universities in Brazil.

At UVU the Celpe-Bras will be offered every semester. For registration and exam dates, check the UVU Celpe-Bras page, but generally speaking, for first semester, around Dec/Jan for registration, and exam in April; for second semester, around Jul/Aug for registration and exam in Nov. The Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese Language focuses on language development and culture. This program provides students an opportunity to prove their proficiency in Spanish at an intermediate level.

Celpe-Bras, Brazilian Portuguese Proficiency Exam

Celpe-Bras is the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners, awarded by Brazil’s Ministry of Education. It is the only such certificate officially recognized by the Brazilian government.

Minor in Portuguese

Earn this minor in conjunction with any UVU Bachelor Degree Major offered. The minor consists of 18 credits of Upper Division coursework (3050 required). For more information contact the Language Department Advisor.

Minor in Languages

Pair Portuguese with an additional language in conjunction with any Bachelor Degree Major UVU offers. Take either 3 Upper Division Portuguese courses (for Language One) or 11 credits of Intermediate level course work or higher (for Language 2).
