This cultural community event, organized in collaboration with the UVU Office of Global Engagement, celebrates the tradition of the “Old New Year,” which is still observed in many Slavic and Eastern Orthodox countries. In 1918, the Soviet Union adopted the Gregorian calendar, shifting dates forward by 13 days. Rather than abandoning the old calendar date, many people continued to celebrate both January 1 and January 14 as the New Year.

Each fall semester, join us for Russian teas and treats while also meeting fellow Russian Studies students, practice speaking Russian, and test your knowledge of Russian history and culture in a Jeopardy-style game. Tea drinking has long been an important part of Russian culture and hospitality, traditionally bringing people together for conversation, stories, and a sense of community. Over a cup of tea, you will learn interesting facts about Russian traditions, literature, geography, and famous historical figures through friendly competition and interactive activities. You can form a team or join us as a supporter to cheer on the others while enjoying a relaxed and welcoming cultural atmosphere.
