Design a Russian Major That Fits Your Goals

Students who want deeper expertise in Russian language and area studies can pursue a Russian Studies major through UVU’s Integrated Studies program. This flexible pathway allows students to combine the Russian Studies minor with any second minor at the university—creating a customized major aligned with specific career ambitions.

Whether your interests lie in national security, international business, cybersecurity, public policy, STEM, or the humanities, this structure enables you to build a coherent program focused on Russia and the broader Russian-speaking world while gaining complementary professional skills.

Integrated Studies

How the Program Works

To complete the Russian Studies major through Integrated Studies, students:

  • Finish the Russian Studies minor (language + area studies)
  • Complete a second minor of their choice
  • Take six Integrated Studies core courses, including:
    • Introduction to interdisciplinary thinking
    • Three “special topics,” interdisciplinary courses
    • A two-course capstone project or thesis

The capstone experience allows students to synthesize their learning into a substantial research paper, policy analysis, creative project, or applied professional work centered on Russia or the Russian-speaking region.

Interdisciplinary Skills Employers Value

The Integrated Studies major emphasizes the ability to connect knowledge across fields—an increasingly important skill in complex global environments. Graduates develop:

  • Advanced critical thinking and analytical abilities
  • Cross-cultural competence and regional expertise
  • Research and writing skills
  • Project design and implementation experience
  • Adaptability for rapidly changing career landscapes

Build a Major Around Your Career Path

Because students select the second minor, the program can be tailored to almost any professional direction. Popular combinations with Russian Studies include:

  • National Security / Political Science – for government and policy careers
  • International Business / Economics – for global commerce and development
  • Cybersecurity / Computer Science / Data Analytics – for technology and security fields
  • Communication – for media and information careers
  • History / Philosophy / Literature – for graduate study and research
