UVU Expands Scholarship Opportunities to First- and Second-Year Students and Others

Astrid S. Tuminez, president of Utah Valley University, announced today $680,000 in funding for two new scholarships: the Greenlight Scholarship that benefits first- and second-year students, and the UVU Reach Scholarship that will be awarded to qualifying students when they hit certain milestones while working toward a bachelor’s degree.

“For years UVU has made intentional decisions to keep tuition as low as possible to help our students succeed. Still, we know many students wonder how they will pay for college,” Tuminez said. “These scholarships are additional intentional decisions to help them complete their degrees.”

Here is how the scholarships will work:

Greenlight Scholarship

For students who qualify, UVU will cover the gap between what a first- or second-year student receives in a Pell Grant and the cost of tuition up to 65 credit hours.

Example:

UVU tuition per semester: $2,561
Student applies for and receives a Pell Grant: $1,000
Difference: $1,561
UVU provides a scholarship for: $1,561
Tuition balance: $0

To qualify for the Greenlight Scholarship, first- and second-year students must:

  1. Complete the FAFSA and receive a Pell Grant.
  2. Be a Utah resident.
  3. Enroll on a full-time basis (at least 12 credit hours per semester).

Qualifying students do not need to fill out a scholarship form. The University will track and award the scholarship automatically, once the FAFSA is complete. The program will begin fall semester 2020, and priority will be given to first-year students who have been admitted to UVU and completed their FAFSA by May 15, 2020.

Milestone 3: The cost of tuition for the final semester (up to 18 credits) if the student is eligible to graduate at the conclusion of that semester AND within four academic years.

To qualify for the UVU Reach Scholarship, students must:

  1. Complete the FAFSA and UVU Reach Scholarship applications by May 15, 2020.
