OREM, Utah — UVU’s Sorensen Student Center will undergo 18 months of reconstruction in order to meet the needs of the university’s growing student population. The rebuild will occur in phases, beginning August 2020 and ending in February 2022.

“This new student center will add value not only in terms of square footage but in student experience and an upgraded look and feel,” said Dr. Kyle Reyes, vice president of Student Affairs. “Construction is happening during a time when students are uncertain about school, but we hope that we can keep the final renderings in mind about the overall student experience and what that’s going to be.”

Major updates to the building will include:

  • Expanding dining areas with additional seating, microwaves, and widened hallways
  • Redesigning the Bookstore (including Scoops and Wolverine Tech)
  • Adding a Starbucks Coffee Company franchise
  • Building an accessible stage in Center Stage
  • Expanding Student Health Services/Mental Health Services, the Center for Social Impact, and Dining Services
  • Renovating Campus Connection, the post office, the Zone, and the office of the Vice President of Student Affairs

“Students need a space to relax on campus where they’re not reminded of school work,” said UVU Student Body President Danielle Corbett. “I really like how this rebuild of the Sorensen Student Center will turn it into the center of campus with more spaces for students to congregate and have fun.”

The construction will affect the businesses, offices, and foot traffic in the Sorensen Student Center as well as parking in lot L13 (by the SLWC). Updates on each of the Sorensen Student Center’s construction phases will be posted to UVU’s Pardon Our Dust website along with information regarding:

  • Temporary office relocations
  • Alternate walkways
  • Temporary business closures and alternative hours of operation

“Anytime that you’re upgrading, anytime that you’re doing construction, it’s going to be a disruption, but this is construction toward an enhanced student experience,” Reyes said. “We’re very excited that construction can move forward even with all that is going on.”
