UVU 2026 Commencement Student Stories: The Beauty of Math and Movement

This commencement season, Utah Valley University is honoring the dedication and accomplishments of students reaching this important milestone.

There’s plenty of science and mathematics at play in the dance world. But most people don’t study them simultaneously.

Ashley Wilcox, who is graduating with bachelor’s degrees in both statistics and dance, sought out UVU so she could do just that.

“Finding a university where I could successfully major in both fields was incredibly important to me,” she said.

Wilcox maintained a 4.0 GPA while a member of UVU’s Contemporary Dance Ensemble, including guest performances with professional companies such as SALT Contemporary Dance, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, and Repertory Dance Theatre.

“What I have enjoyed most is the balance between physical and intellectual challenge,” she said. “Dance pushes me creatively and physically, while statistics stretches me analytically and mentally.”

After graduation, Wilcox said she plans to pursue a dance career full time, while working part-time as a statistician. She said UVU has given her the foundation to pursue both careers.

“Being able to move my body while also engaging deeply with mathematics has made my college experience both fulfilling and uniquely my own,” she said.
