As part of commencement celebrations, Utah Valley University is featuring the unique stories and successes of graduating students.
When Olivia Blackwell first arrived at UVU, she came alone, with no friends, no family nearby, and no clear idea of what her future would hold.
Four years later, she is graduating as valedictorian for the College of Health and Public Service and served as a Presidential Intern for UVU’s chief financial officer.
“That’s what UVU does,” Blackwell said. “It creates opportunities you wouldn’t expect and helps you discover where you belong.”
During Blackwell’s freshman year, she faced intense depression and anxiety, focusing more on getting through each day than on academics. But she said everything changed when she received scholarship support.
“Those opportunities gave me confidence,” she said. “They opened doors and helped me believe that something better was possible.”
With that support, Blackwell became deeply involved on campus, serving in leadership roles, founding the Women for UVU club, graduating from the LEAD Program with high distinction, and even co-founding a nonprofit dedicated to wellness. Her impact earned her the Wellness Programs Student Excellence Award.
Looking back, Blackwell sees a complete transformation.
“The person I was four years ago and who I am today are completely different,” she said. “UVU gave me purpose.”
