What aviation-related degrees are offered at UVU?

View degree options and related career fields on the Aviation site.

How much do UVU flight courses cost?

Please visit the Aviation Sciences page for cost information. Note that the aviation tuition rates and flight training fees are listed separately. VA will pay up to the flight training fee that is associated with each flight course.

Any additional tutor hours that are necessary to complete the course or obtain a license are the responsibility of the student and must be paid and flown by the last day of the semester. This is a condition of UVU's VA approval for the flight program.

Consequently, we highly recommend students check in with their instructor at or prior to the half-way point of the semester if they think they will need to fly additional tutor hours.

How many flight hours will VA pay for?

VA will pay up to the flight hours built into each course. To view the number of hours, visit the Aviation Page, click the green button under Flight Training Fees – Local Students, and then look in the second column.

If more hours are needed to complete the course or license, the student must buy additional tutor hours out-of-pocket and fly them by the last day of the semester. This is a condition of UVU's VA approval for the flight program.

We highly recommend students check in with their instructor at or prior to the half-way point of the semester if they think they will need to fly additional tutor hours.

What are the requirements to receive flight fee benefits at UVU?

Veterans Affairs makes payments according to the benefit type and your eligibility. The following are additional requirements:

  1. Apply and be approved for VA benefits under Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill®, Fry Scholarship, Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship, or Chapter 31 VR&E (case-by-case basis).
  2. Chapter 33 9/11 GI Bill®, Fry Scholarship, and Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship recipients must fly at UVU’s local flight school in Provo, Utah. Chapter 31 VR&E recipients must have their case manager send a separate Purchase Order authorization directly to the flight school. UVU will NOT transfer funds to other flight schools under any circumstance or benefit.
  3. Be declared in a degree-seeking aviation program with UVU. Aviation degree offerings are available on the Aviation Sciences website.
  4. Take VA approved flight courses (currently includes AVSC 1110, 1250, 2310, 2450) as part of a requirement for a degree program. Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) courses are NOT approved for VA benefits at UVU.
  5. Not have previously completed the flight license or course. VA will not pay for repeats of a license or course unless the grade was insufficient for graduation.
  6. Submit other required documentation to the school so that your benefit request can be processed. An overview of required forms is available on the Benefit Options page. A signed Flight Form will be required once you are registered for AVSC 1110, 1250, 2310, or 2450. This is used to acknowledge you received and read important flight benefit policies

Will VA pay for my flight hours at a separate “contracted” flight school?

No. UVU does not have any contract agreements with third party flight schools. UVU cannot send money to separate flight schools. You may still qualify for standard benefit payments and/or Financial Aid for your UVU courses, and then use some of that money toward your flight school costs. However, this is not recommended because it typically is not sufficient to cover all of the flight fees.

Does UVU offer courses for helicopter flight training?

Not at this time. UVU currently offers flight courses in fixed-wing aircraft only. However, we do offer an Aviation Management degree that does not require flight hours. UVU may also accept certain rotary wing licenses as transfer credit into an aviation degree.

Will VA pay for Private Pilot flight training at UVU?

Because UVU is an Institution of Higher Learning (IHL), our AVSC 1110 Flight Private Pilot course can be certified under the Post 9/11 GI Bill® with the VA as part of a degree-seeking program for students that meet the eligibility requirements. Students using the Veteran Readiness and Employment program (VR&E) may or may not be approved for Private Pilot funding, depending on their specific case.

Will the VA pay for me to obtain my Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) training?

No. Certified flight instructor (CFI) courses are NOT approved for any VA funding at UVU. If you are completing your flight training at a different flight school, that school may be able to certify CFI courses depending on what their State Approving Agency has approved.

How do I set up benefits for my flight courses at UVU?

Benefits can be set up completely electronically/online. View our benefits page for step-by-step guidance. We are also available to assist you face-to-face in our center, via  , or by phone at 801-863-8212. A Flight Form will be required once you are registered for AVSC 1110, 1250, 2310, or 2450.
