# Contact Hour Requirements

A contact hour is defined as the total number of actual hours per week a student spends attending class or other instructional activities that count toward completing a program of study.
UVU calculates the contact hours from a course’s credit ratio, where:
LEC hours + LAB hours = Total Contact Hours per Week.

Hours per Week

Academic Departments are responsible for ensuring each course section fulfills the minimum contact hours per week. Always verify the credit ratio entered is correct by referencing the Course Catalog.

Formula If your credit ratio is 3:2:2 (3 credits, 2 lecture hours, 2 lab hours): Add lecture hours + lab hours = Total Contact Hours 2 + 2 = 4 Total Contact Hours Multiply total contact hours x 750 minutes (min req'd) 4 x 750 = 3,000 Total Minutes Divide total minutes by # weeks in semester 3,000 / 15 = 200 Minutes per Week Divide minutes per week by 60 minutes per hour 200 / 60 = 3.33 Hours per Week If your credit ratio is 3:3:0 (3 credits, 3 lecture hours, 0 lab hours): Add lecture hours + lab hours = Total Contact Hours 3 + 0 = 3 Total Contact Hours Multiply total contact hours x 750 minutes (min req'd) 3 x 750 = 2,250 Total Minutes Divide total minutes by # weeks in semester 2,250 / 15 = 150 Minutes per Week Divide minutes per week by 60 minutes per hour 150 / 60 = 2.50 Hours per Week
