Overview of the Admissions Process

Architectural education at Utah Valley University consists of the following two degrees: 

  • A.S. Engineering Design Technology (Architectural Drafting and Design Track)
  • Bachelor of Architecture (B-Arch)

Both degrees require an admissions application in the Spring semester prior to the Fall semester to which they would like to be admitted. Transfer credits must be approved by the Architecture Program Coordinator in writing.

A.S. Engineering Design Technology

A.S. Engineering Design Technology
After being admitted to the university, students interested in a career in architecture should declare their major and apply for the Architectural Drafting and Design track of the A.S. in Engineering Design Technology degree. This degree allows a student to pursue entry-level employment as a drafter in the architectural industry.  Only those who complete this track are eligible for matriculation into the B.Arch degree program.

Applications are submitted during the Spring semester of the first year of coursework. The deadline for applications is March 18th. To apply, students submit the following items as an email attachment to [email protected]. All attachments should be submitted as a PDF in 8.5" x 11" format. 

  • Application Form
  • Portfolio (5 pages of your creative work)
  • Statement of Intent (250 words)
  • Unofficial University Transcript
  • Resume of work history

Students accepted into the program will be notified by April 1st. Admitted students will be eligible to enroll in the second year design studio sequence (ARC 2110 & ARC 2210).

NOTE: Any students not admitted into the second year design studio sequence are encouraged to speak with their academic advisor about the following options:
  1. Continue pursuing the A.S in Engineering Design Technology degree but select a new specialization track within the AED department.
    • Civil Drafting and Design Track
    • Mechanical Drafting and Design Track
    • Structural Drafting and Design Track
    • General Drafting and Design Track

Bachelor of Architecture

Bachelor of Architecture
The Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) degree is a five-year professional degree that prepares students for leadership in the profession as licensed architects. In order to apply for matriculation into the B.Arch degree, students must complete the A.S. in Engineering Design Technology (Architecture Drafting and Design Track) with a minimum grade of C or better. This includes completing ARC 2110 and ARC 2210 (or current enrollment in ARC 2210 at the time of application).

Applications are submitted during the Spring semester of the second year of coursework in the A.S. degree. The deadline for applications is March 18th. To apply, students submit the following items by mail to the AED department in a 9" x 12" manila envelope. All attachments should be submitted both as PDFs on a USB thumbdrive as well as physical 8.5" x 11" printed copies.

  • Portfolio (10 pages of your creative work)
  • Statement of Intent (500 words)
  • Unofficial University Transcript
  • Resume of work history
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation
