Getting the Most Out of Your Roots of Knowledge Visit

Light shining through stained glass windows at the roots of knowledge.Have you ever visited the famous stained-glass windows on UVU campus? Whether you’ve never been, are a regular attendee, or have only seen pictures online, visiting Roots of Knowledge in the Fulton Library is one of the best ways on campus to find inspiration and make meaning outside of your classes. As we approach the tenth anniversary of Roots of Knowledge later this year, we want to highlight how you can get the most out of your visit to the stunning stained-glass installation.

About Roots of Knowledge

Privately funded and over a decade in the making, the 154-foot work of art created by Holdman Studios spans 80 windows and includes more than 40,000 pieces of glass. It beautifully weaves together moments of discovery, creativity, and human achievement—from ancient fossils and inventions to literature and the arts. To learn more about the remarkable journey and history of Roots of Knowledge, explore the creation process, view the full project timeline, or visit the digital archives.

Visit the Gallery

Roots of Knowledge, located in the Bingham Gallery in the UVU Fulton Library, is open seven days a week and always has free admission. The best time to visit the gallery is about an hour before sunset, but the windows are beautiful no matter what time you come (even at night, thanks to our external lighting system!). Whether you come for an informal walk-through, a public guided tour, or a university lecture, there are many ways to learn more about the hundreds of references within the windows:

  • Self-Guided Tour: If you’re looking for a moment of introspection or just want to learn something new, come walk through the gallery during open hours. You can pick up a free brochure about the windows by the gallery entrances, explore the Roots of Knowledge reading list, or complete one of our scavenger hunts. If you have questions, available docents can give you more information about the scenes in the panels.
  • Virtual & Audio Tours: If you’re unable to visit the windows in person or would like to hear more about their history, you can view our online virtual tour, which is an interactive view of the panels with in-depth explanations of each element. You can also listen to our prerecorded audio tours sharing an introduction, a behind-the-scenes look, and an in-depth explanation of the windows.
  • Public Guided Tours: We offer public guided tours on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 2:00 pm. On the last Wednesday of the month, we offer a themed tour with guides, free popcorn, and prizes at each stop and free popcorn.
  • Speaker Series:Roots of Knowledge hosts a lecture series each semester from breakthrough scholars on different topics found within the windows. You can find a list of topics and speakers on our events calendar.
